Speech Competition at BIS

Last week saw the culmination of several weeks work on writing and delivering speeches in Year 5 and 6. The 11 finalists competed against one another in an unbelievably exciting finale. Every child delivered their speeches confidently and the amount of time spent on them was evident.

The judges had a very difficult job to choose the winners. In the end Chaiti from 6N was awarded first place, Matthew from 5V came second and Jung Min from 6H came third (see right).

Well done to everyone in MP3 for researching, writing and delivering your own speeches. Here is a short clip of the speeches.

Sports Days at AP1

It's been a busy week of Sports Days at AP1. From the 800m track event to the traditional egg and spoon race, there was something for everyone. Well done to all that took part, supported, cheered, and did their best. Many records were broken and announcements of all this and more will be made this week at assembly.

MP3 Live Lunches

What a privilege and a pleasure to be in the audience for the 'Live Lunches' that took place this week in the Multi Purpose Room.  Students from Year 5 and 6 gave a stunning array of performances with solos, duets and some band performances. There were some guest appearances from Ms Julia from AP2 and Mr Hoi our violin teacher here at AP1.
Well done to all the students who participated and the lovely audiences that came along on both days.

AP1 Market Day

WOW!
What a superb morning at AP1. The culmination of so much hard work, enthusiasm, learning and entrepreneurship resulted in an absolutely wonderful and enriching experience for all. The preparation has been intense with children learning all about buying and selling from start to finish. Marketing, advertising, profits, losses, target audiences. Our students could give the contestants on 'The Apprentice' a run for their money.
This morning, children had the opportunity to be entertained by 3V's Got Talent, relax with a massage in the 3S Massage parlour, have their photo taken in the whacky photo booth by 6I, get their nails painted in 4I or their faces painted by 4N.
Games included basketball by 1I, skittles by 1V, The Hoopla by 1B and after all that perhaps a juice and snack at the cafe run by 3N or a cooling snowball by 5B.
The list of superb stalls could go on and on. Each and every class rose to the occasion and all of the staff are incredibly proud of their achievements.
Sincere thanks to John Handscombe and Andy James who were the brains behind the operation. The behind the scenes work of both and indeed all the staff ensured that our children had another memorable and rewarding learning experience here at AP1.

Calculation Workshops for parents

Tuesday and Thursday mornings saw many parents from MP1, 2 and 3 attending workshops on the use of calculations here at AP1. Many parents will agree that working at home on Maths homework can be challenging especially when trying to understand the different methods used compared to when we were at school!
As Mr Andy said, the workshops were an opportunity to 'demystify' the different strategies used and offer an insight into why and how we approach Maths the way we do.
All the presentations are available in the useful document sections of the Parents Blog and the links are also here too.

Brilliant Book Week at AP1

By hook or by crook, let's awaken a love for books....
This was certainly the case last week at AP1 where a fantastic Book Week culminated in a Dress Up Day on Friday with children and staff arriving as their favourite book characters.
With our visiting author, Adam Bushnell, in residence children and parents were treated to fantastic stories and were inspired to pick up a book and simply read.
Huge thanks to all the parents that went to so much trouble with costumes and that came to the wonderful parent assemblies that Adam hosted after school.

Reading Workshops for MP2 and MP3

AP1 hosted another successful reading workshop on Thursday morning, this time for parents of children in MP2 and MP3. Mr Jonathan, English Subject Leader, guided the parents through how reading is approached for children in these mileposts as well as sharing ideas for reading at home. With older children we often assume that once they can read independently, there is no need for parents to hear them read. Mr Jonathan stressed the importance of not only listening to your child read all the way up the school but also the importance of the discussion that the text can generate and how this helps comprehension skills and language development. For other top tips, please click on the links for a copy of the handouts from the presentation or take a look at the presentation itself which is on the English Blog and linked below.

EYFS and MP1 Reading Workshop

It was great to see so many  parents at the EYFS and MP1 Reading Workshop.  The approach to teaching phonics, pre reading skills and how we teach reading were all explained and the parents also got to watch some lessons in action. It was a great way to see how we approach the teaching of reading at BIS and also see some of the strategies and skills being modelled by teachers and students so that parents can do the same at home.
There were also some top tips on helping children with their reading at home. A copy of the slideshow used is available below as well as copies of the handouts given to parents.

It's hard to believe that we have only been back at school for 4 weeks especially when you see so much already happening across the campus. The EYFS is a hive of activity and across the other mileposts the children have been busy with their entry points for the fabulous topics they are studying as part of the IPC. Check out the pictures below to see what has been happening in all the year groups in the last few weeks.
